Sharp as a whisker! Tamron lenses get their licks in at giant east coast Pet Expo

Tamron Teams Up With New York Camera & Video to Showcase Tamron Lenses and Offer Free Pet Portrait Sitting At the 2006 Annual Greater Philadelphia Pet Expo

March 24, 2006, Commack, NY— Billed as the largest pet show on the east coast, the 2006 Annual Greater Philadelphia Pet Expo, held in Fort Washington, PA was a major event, with close to 50,000 visitors and substantial media coverage. Tapping into the animal magnetism, Tamron was there in force, with a comprehensive line of Tamron lenses on display by New York Camera & Video, and a free pet portrait service operated by leading local pet portrait photographer Helene Goldberg of The Animal Studio (www.theanimalstudio.com). Local CBS radio station 98.1 WOGL ran radio commercials announcing that New York Camera would be at the expo to show Tamron lenses, and give away professional 8x10 photos of the pets to owners who would pick them up at the store. New York Camera also created a charming and amusing in-store exhibit of the approximately 100 photos, which included pictures of dogs (by far the most popular subject) cats, puppies, ferrets, a rabbit, and a rat. To wrap up the show, Valerie Knight hosted a live radio program of the event from noon to 2PM on the closing Saturday.

New York Camera & Video of Southampton, PA (www.nycv.com), a 20,000 square foot store, is the largest photo specialty retailer in the area, and they do a great business with Tamron lenses and digital SLRs. As owner Frank Cundari notes, “As the prices of DSLR bodies have come down to the $500-600 level, more and more consumers have been attracted to their performance advantages, such as short shutter lag time, which is especially evident when shooting pictures in rapid succession. When you take pictures of pets, this kind of responsiveness is very important. We had nearly the whole line of Tamron lenses on display, but the ones we featured were the SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Macro, the 18-200mm and the 28-300. The 28-75 f/2.8 is a great choice for taking natural-looking pictures in low light, but many first-time DSLR owners gravitate to the 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3, the closest thing to a universal zoom lens. We didn’t actually sell a lot of lenses at the show but we are generating additional sales as people come in to get their pictures.”

Helene Goldberg, who created all the superb pet pictures that were printed out by New York Camera, has been shooting pet portraits professionally for years, both at shows and for private clients, and she’s obviously very good at what she does. “I used to shoot with medium-format film cameras,” she says, “but I’m very pleased with the performance of the Canon EOS 20D, especially with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens, which always delivers clear, sharp, distortion-free images at all focal lengths. It’s also very versatile when you have to photograph small animals because you can get in close and still maintain a good working distance to skittish subjects. I generally take my animal portraits using a mini-studio setup and Elinchrom strobes for lighting. This lets me shoot at the middle apertures like f/8 and f/11—a good thing because animals are sometimes so unpredictable that you need good depth of field to insure sharp images. The Pet Expo was certainly a plus for me in terms of P.R., and I’ve had good feedback from people who want additional copies of my pictures and to arrange for private sittings. The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens has become my favorite because it lets me do my job efficiently and to a high standard—I guess you could call it pet friendly.”

About Tamron

Tamron is a leading manufacturer of lenses for photographic, industrial, laboratory, video, digital, and scientific applications. Ever since it opened its doors in 1950, Tamron has been noted for optical innovation and imaging excellence. Among the pioneers of zoom lens technology, Tamron was also the first to mass produce hybrid aspherical elements in 1997, paving the way for producing today’s remarkable high quality, long-range zoom lenses with macro capability, including the ground-breaking 28-200mm and 28-300mm which have won more awards than any other lenses in their class. This legacy continues with the current line of Di and Di-II lenses specifically formulated to meet the stringent demands of today’s digital SLR cameras.
